The content on this site will primarily refer to the accessibility of websites hosted in Drupal environments, as Drupal is the main content management system used by the University of Pittsburgh.
Please note that the accessibility requirements below still apply even if you are not using Drupal. Consult your website builder’s help documentation for how to apply their accessibility features.
Website Accessibility Principles
Your website and all of its pages should be accessible in all of the following areas. Select each principle to learn more about what it means and how to apply it.
- Sufficient color contrast and proper use of color
- Meaningful text for any links
- Chronological, nested heading structure
- Appropriate use of built-in styles for any bulleted and numbered lists
- Alternative text for all images, graphs, or charts
- Any data tables properly identified with headers
Additionally, be sure to check that any videos or documents housed on your website meet all of their required accessibility features before publishing.
Siteimprove
We recommend that you check the current accessibility of your website with Siteimprove and use its feedback to make improvements. Siteimprove checks for all of the accessibility principles listed above and more. Regular scans of many University websites are already in place with a plethora of data to review. More information about using and accessing Siteimprove can be found on our Siteimprove Tool page.
