This exhibition, assembled as part of the Black Loves in Focus initiative, highlights 21 artworks and 10 text responses that explore the richness and complexity of the Black experience in America. From the celebration of Black love and beauty to reflections on systemic biases as well as tributes to lives lost, these pieces offer a diverse response to our central question. This exhibition does not presume to speak for all of the Black experience, but rather to highlight some of the voices in our community. The artists and writers represented here were selected from our Pitt and Southwestern Pennsylvania communities.
Special thanks to the members of the artist selection committee, and PNC for its generous support.
Large scale reproductions of the artworks below will be displayed on the Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) Walk (between the Cathedral of Learning and Heinz Chapel) from September 9 through September 23, 2021. A small selection of these works will also be on display at the Carnegie Museum of Art. The exhibition will then travel to the University of Pittsburgh’s regional campuses during the 2021-2022 academic year.
